Michael Counts

Michael Counts is a stage director, designer, and visual artist. Inspired by elements of theater, film, contemporary and traditional dance, sculpture, and painting, Michael strives to unite a diversity of media springing from the archives of art and cultural iconography.  With over ten years of experience, he has created a large body of work ranging from intimate studio productions and sprawling performance installations to ambitious New York public artworks such as the recent “LOOKING FORWARD.”

As the co-founder and artistic director of GAle GAtes et al., Michael led one of the fastest-growing performance and visual art companies in New York City. Michael created epic performance installations each with sold-out audiences and critical praise.  Considered a founding artist of Brooklyn’s celebrated DUMBO, Michael united businesses and cultural institutions through his unique and unconventional vision, spearheading the redevelopment and economic revitalization of the community.  Michael has also done work at the Center for New Theatre at the California Institute of the Arts, and had success as the founder of the C & Hammermill Company and Exhibition Space in Saratoga Springs, New York.

He has created productions and exhibitions in New York, Tokyo, Bangkok, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Prague.  Reviews of his work have been featured in Art In America, Art Forum, Black Book and The New York Times among other magazines and newspapers.  He currently lives and works in New York City.
